  • Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand

“Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand “

    Matthew 4:17 NKJV
[17] From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

    https://bible.com/bible/114/mat.4.17.NKJV

    Mark 1:14-15 NKJV
[14] Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, [15] and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

    https://bible.com/bible/114/mrk.1.14-15.NKJV

    Matthew 3:1-2 NKJV
[1] In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, [2] and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”

    https://bible.com/bible/114/mat.3.1-2.NKJV

“The Gospel of the kingdom” is the message of repentance. Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand (it is near)

Mark’s gospel includes “repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Mark 1:14-15

The message of God to His people from the beginning has always been “repent and believe.” Adam could have repented and believed in God to save him. God came looking for Adam, after he and Eve had eaten the poisonous fruit. But they hid out of guilt, shame and fear. (Genesis ch 3)

Guilt, because they knew they had rebelled against God, choosing to do the one thing He had forbidden.

Shame, because guilt leads to shame from the stain of sin on the inside. Iniquity is the stain of sin, left on the human soul;  the inner knowledge that we’ve done wrong and committed sin and our guilt leads to shame and condemnation; self-condemnation.

    Romans 8:1-2 ESV
[1] There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. [2] For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

    https://bible.com/bible/59/rom.8.1-2.ESV

Fear takes over once guilt and shame have consumed one’s conscience; the fear of being found out. What if others know? What if God finds out? So we make efforts to hide our guilt, which leads us into darkness. The longer and further we go on and continue in our sinful state, stained with the iniquity of our sins, the darker our inner life will become. Darkness leads to spiritual blindness. Our ability to make wise decisions, and say no to temptation are greatly hindered.

Guilt, shame and fear will continue to rule in our hearts until we “repent and believe in the Gospel.” The light that shines in our darkness is the Truth of God’s word, which is the Gospel; the good news of Christ’s Resurrection.

    This is why Paul declares:

    Romans 1:16-17 ESV
[16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. [17] For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

    https://bible.com/bible/59/rom.1.16-17.ESV

You can be ruled by guilt, shame and fear, which are the lies of the enemy, the deception he uses to keep you chained and in bondage to your own self-centeredness and self-condemnation.

Or you can repent and believe in the Gospel and receive the power of God’s forgiveness and grace and be set free from your past sins and iniquities.

Repent and believe, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand (near). Truth is, it’s only a prayer away. Repent, confess, be forgiven and cleansed, and you can walk as a free person.

  • He who heeds the word wisely…

    Proverbs 16:20 NKJV
[20] He who heeds the word wisely will find good, And whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he.

    https://bible.com/bible/114/pro.16.20.NKJV

Heeds: listens intently. He who listens to the word intently.

I can listen to something without actually hearing it.. But to listen intently means that I’m ready, willing, and able to put what I’m hearing into practice (he who has ears to hear, let him hear).

To heed the word wisely; with ears to hear, as given by the Holy Spirit, I’m able to truly hear what God is saying to me. When I read scripture, pray and meditate upon it, the living power of His word penetrates my heart and mind, and the written word becomes alive and active within me, and I am able to discern what I am to do with this message. (Hebrews 4:12)

This is that still, small voice that we often hear about, but only personally experience on the inside when we’re willing to “heed the word wisely “

When the Holy Spirit gives me ears to hear and a heart that is prepared to receive His word, then is where and when I’m truly enabled to trust in Him.

When I am able to heed the word wisely and trust Him completely and fully, that is where true, inner happiness, peace and contentment comes from

The beatitudes are the fruit or result of those who heed the word wisely and trust Him with all of their heart, mind, soul and strength.

Happy is he who heeds the word wisely and trusts in Him. Truly, goodness and mercy will follow him all the days of his life and he will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  • Prisoner to my flesh or prisoner of God!

We will all serve one or the other. Truth is, we get to choose daily who we will serve!

The poor in spirit and the prisoner of the Lord:

    This is the state of those who humbly seek the Lord and His righteousness and His guidance;

The Lord hears the poor and does not despise His prisoners Psalms 69:33

We go to church and contribute of our tithes and offerings, sing hymns and songs of worship, we pray, we offer our help with church programs, etc. but is your  heart fully surrendered to God? Are you poor and needy? Are you the prisoner of the Lord? What does this mean for practical, daily living?

Paul, in Ephesians 3:1 refers to himself as “the prisoner of Christ.” A prisoner is one who is in custody; more than a servant, much like a slave. But in this case Paul has surrendered himself; heart, mind, soul, and strength, offering himself as a living sacrifice to God. This is our reasonable act of worship.

To be poor in spirit means to empty one of himself before God. When I come to the inner revelation that I have nothing to offer to God but myself; all of me, I realize how poor and needy I truly am; naked and destitute. There is nothing good in me, that is, in my flesh. My only response is to offer myself a living sacrifice before God. This is what it means to poor in spirit and the prisoner of Christ. I belong to Him, for I was bought (redeemed) at a great price. Therefore, my fitting response is to be fully committed to Him.
The only way one can obey His commands to love God and one another is to become poor in spirit and surrender as a prisoner in chains.

    Psalms 69:30-33 NKJV
[30] I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving. [31] This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull, Which has horns and hooves. [32] The humble shall see this and be glad; And you who seek God, your hearts shall live. [33] For the Lord hears the poor, And does not despise His prisoners.

    Psalms 28:7 NKJV

    Psalms 50:13-15 NKJV
[13] Will I eat the flesh of bulls, Or drink the blood of goats? [14] Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High. [15] Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

    Psalms 68:6 NKJV

  • Happy and blessed are they that…

True disciples, that is, followers of Christ, will want to follow him. But it’s not  merely an issue of do’s and don’ts.. it’s a matter of the heart and who is Lord and Master of your heart.

When we choose to live as Christ lived, it will give us great joy, peace and happiness to love as he loved and serve as he served. Jesus’s sermon on the Mount is more than a list of rules or laws, but the inner qualities and characteristics of those who choose to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him.

The beatitudes represent the mind of Christ and the way he lived and modeled for people who choose to follow Him. This will be their attitude as he cultivates His life in them; as He lives in and through them, filled with and walking in the Spirit.

As we choose to follow Him in this way, we become the salt of the earth and light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16) reflecting his life and light, as he transforms us by the renewing of our minds.  This is how his love spreads from person to person. This is the fulfillment of the great commandment, to live God with all of our being, and our neighbors as ourselves.

    Matthew 5:1-12 NKJV
[1] And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. [2] Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: [3] “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [4] Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. [5] Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. [6] Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. [7] Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. [8] Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. [9] Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. [10] Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [11] “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. [12] Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  • What does it mean to write God’s word on your heart?

We delight to do God’s commandments. It means that, when we read God’s word, including His commandments, the inclination to do them is engraved or inscribed in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. The living power of His word is activated as we are filled with the Spirit and walking in Him and in His will and purpose for our lives. Our conscience is awakened to His presence and guided by His influence; by His mighty hand and His still small voice.

God’s word, when written on our hearts, like an inner light, illuminates the path  before us. His word is a lamp to our feet and a light upon our path. This is the path of righteousness. His word, written on our hearts, gives us the wisdom to faithfully obey His commands, his truths, His precepts and instructions. All of this is provided by the Living God, to help, comfort, teach and counsel those who seek Him and His kingdom and righteousness.

    ‭2 Corinthians 3:2-3 NLT‬
[2] The only letter of recommendation we need is you yourselves. Your lives are a letter written in our hearts; everyone can read it and recognize our good work among you. [3] Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This “letter” is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts.

    https://bible.com/bible/116/2co.3.2-3.NLT

    ‭Jeremiah 31:31-33 NLT‬
[31] “The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. [32] This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the Lord. [33] “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

    https://bible.com/bible/116/jer.31.31-33.NLT

    ‭Hebrews 8:6-13 NLT‬
[6] But now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who mediates for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises. [7] If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it. [8] But when God found fault with the people, he said: “The day is coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. [9] This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and led them out of the land of Egypt. They did not remain faithful to my covenant, so I turned my back on them, says the Lord. [10] But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. [11] And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already. [12] And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.” [13] When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear.

  • Guilt, shame and fear as weapons of the enemy!

In spiritual contexts, “guilt, shame, and fear” are often described as “weapons of the enemy” because they are powerful emotions that can be used to manipulate and control us, causing us to feel isolated, unworthy, and unable to approach God or others for help, effectively hindering our spiritual growth and wellbeing; essentially, the “enemy” (often representing negative forces or the devil) uses these emotions to create a sense of separation and distance from positive influences.

    How to combat these “weapons”:
    Confession and repentance:
Acknowledging one’s mistakes and seeking forgiveness from God and others can help to alleviate guilt and shame.

    Scripture study:
Reading and meditating on Bible verses that speak to God’s love and forgiveness can provide reassurance and counter negative thoughts.

    Community support:
Sharing struggles with trusted friends or spiritual leaders can provide encouragement and a sense of belonging.

    Developing a healthy self-image:
Recognizing one’s inherent worth and value as a child of God can combat the lies of shame and self-deprecation.

    Isaiah 54:17 NKJV
[17] No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord.

    https://bible.com/bible/114/isa.54.17.NKJV

  • Out of the depths my soul cries

    Psalm 130:3-4 ESV
[3] If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? [4] But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.

    https://bible.com/bible/59/psa.130.3-4.ESV

    Nahum 1:6-7 ESV
[6]  Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him. [7]  The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.

    https://bible.com/bible/59/nam.1.6-7.ESV

Stronghold, refuge; we see these words often in the scriptures, especially in the Psalms, which are mostly prayers with accompanying music. In times of great struggles and trials, turning to God for comfort and strength. God ministers to us on the inside, in our hearts. He is our stronghold, our Rock, our refuge and strength. In Him we find safety and protection from the enemy that wars against our soul, attempting to rob our peace, kill our dreams and potential, and destroy us from the inside out.

There is nothing so bad that God cannot forgive and lead us through. No matter how evil or wicked one thinks they are, God can forgive your past sins and cleanse your heart from the stains of iniquity.

When life seems to have gotten the best of you, take refuge in Him, in God’s hands. He will shine His grace upon you. His mercies are new every morning, and great is His promise and His faithfulness. He will lead you like a Shepherd. He will provide for you and protect you. Trust in Him and His unfailing love.

  • To You, Oh Lord, every knee shall bow!

    Psalm 65:2 ESV
[2] O you who hear prayer, to you shall all flesh come.

    https://bible.com/bible/59/psa.65.2.ESV

    Romans 14:11 NKJV

    Philippians 2:10-11 NKJV
[10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, [11] and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

    https://bible.com/bible/114/php.2.10-11.NKJV

    Isaiah 66:23 NKJV
[23] And it shall come to pass That from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the Lord.

    https://bible.com/bible/114/isa.66.23.NKJV

    Psalm 86:9 ESV
[9]  All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name.

    https://bible.com/bible/59/psa.86.9.ESV

At some point in every person’s life, they will come to that place within where they question their existence and purpose; the meaning of it all.

Why am I here? How did I get here? Is there more to life than what I see on the surface?

On the inside, in our hearts, there is this instinctive sense of something deeper; a connection with God our Creator. Some people come to this inner awareness and knowledge of God’s presence early in life, while for others, it may take longer. But eventually, as life proceeds, everyone is plagued with these life probing questions and a deeper sense of curiosity. The great mysteries of life and faith pique our interest and become attainable as we seek to know God personally and more intimately, and to follow Him and learn of His plan for our lives.

Many of us come to Him following traumatic life events and experiences; when great trials, tribulations, and turbulent times turn our lives upside down.

Many times we will turn to others for comfort, guidance and support. It is in such times, as we come along side of people who are going through painful and trying times that they are more open, receptive and vulnerable to God on the inside, and the light of God that exists in every one of us is brightened and we become more aware of His love, grace and mercy, and His abiding and guiding presence.

At some point in life, every knee will bow at His presence as we are  brought to the end of ourselves, to that place where we’ve run out of answers and life seems like a far off mystery, where life seems to be getting the best of us, and our energy is greatly diminished.

In the midst of our darkness, His light comes shining through, and our soul becomes illuminated, and we see Him where He is, was and always will be. He never leaves nor forsakes us. He is always just a prayer away.

No matter how far and deeply you may feel you have fallen from Him, remember that place of humility and surrender, where your own knee will bow, to the glory of God in heaven, who lives and reigns within the heart of those who are bowed to Him.

So give Him your anger and bitterness, your anxieties and frustration, your pain and everything that is attempting to rob you of inner peace and joy and happiness. The only place to do this is in that place where every knee will bow!

  • Take up your mighty shield of Faith!

    Psalm 64:10 ESV
[10] Let the righteous one rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him! Let all the upright in heart exult!

    Ephesians 6:16 NKJV
[16] above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

    I John 5:4-5 NKJV

    I John 2:13 NKJV
[13] I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, Because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father.

    https://bible.com/bible/114/1jn.2.13.NKJV

    I John 4:4 NKJV
[4] You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

    https://bible.com/bible/114/1jn.4.4.NKJV

    NLTPsalms 64:1-10 NLT
[1] O God, listen to my complaint. Protect my life from my enemies’ threats. [2] Hide me from the plots of this evil mob, from this gang of wrongdoers. [3] They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows. [4] They shoot from ambush at the innocent, attacking suddenly and fearlessly. [5] They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps in secret. “Who will ever notice?” they ask. [6] As they plot their crimes, they say, “We have devised the perfect plan!” Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning. [7] But God himself will shoot them with his arrows, suddenly striking them down. [8] Their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn. [9] Then everyone will be afraid; they will proclaim the mighty acts of God and realize all the amazing things he does. [10] The godly will rejoice in the Lord and find shelter in him. And those who do what is right will praise him.

    https://bible.com/bible/116/psa.64.1-10.NLT

All day long the enemy is at work, attempting to infiltrate my mind with the fiery darts of the wicked one and his worldly schemes.

His goal is to shake my faith and cause me to fear man and his twisted thoughts and words, and to doubt God and the promises of His word.

The greatest enemies are my own thoughts in the hands of the evil one. The devil will use other people and outside influences to invade my territory and take control of my heart, mind and soul, zapping my strength as I lose focus on the Lord and His firm grip on me.

Paul instructs the church in Ephesians 6 to put on the full armor of God, which includes the shield of faith, with which we can quench the fiery darts of the enemy; those opposing thoughts, worldly philosophies, ideologies and mindsets; the strongholds of the world.

When we raise our shield of faith, the enemy will not be able to penetrate that piece of armor, provided by the Holy Spirit living and working in me, that is, in my soul, at the core of my being.

When we interlock our shield of faith with the shields of others, the enemy will be no match. When we stand together, as the Church, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we will be stronger yet, and be enabled by the Holy Spirit to love God and one another, as Jesus commands us to. This joining together fortifies and strengthens each of us, as we encourage and support each other in times of weakness and crisis.

We will rejoice greatly as He hides us in the shadow and shelter of His wings. We will be enabled to walk uprightly and praise God in the presence of our enemies. That shield of faith is ours, because God freely provides it for the spiritual warfare we fight every day, knowing that the battle belongs to Him, and that in Him we have nothing short of victory in Jesus name!

  • While we were still sinners…

    Romans 5:8 NKJV
[8] But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

    https://bible.com/bible/114/rom.5.8.NKJV

    IN CONTEXT

    Romans 5:6-11 NKJV
[6] For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. [8] But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. [9] Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. [10] For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. [11] And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

    Romans 8:38-39 NIV
[38] For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, [39] neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    https://bible.com/bible/111/rom.8.38-39.NIV

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us…

    Psalms 32:1-5 NLT
[1] Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! [2] Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty! [3] When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. [4] Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude [5] Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude

    https://bible.com/bible/116/psa.32.1-5.NLT

David often prayed in the Psalms for his sins and transgressions. He took great comfort in knowing that our God is a loving and forgiving God, ready and able to forgive those who turn to Him in repentance and believe on His matchless and glorious Name.

When we repent and believe, humbling ourselves before Him, He ministers to us, His children, as a loving and devoted father would for his own biological children, but much more so.

When we repent and believe in the Gospel, His great love sweeps through our soul, our inner being, and exposes the darkness of our sinful hearts that hides behind guilt, shame and fear. His love and His light exposes our darkness, and the truth of God’s word sets us free as we confess our sins, pleading on the blood of Jesus Christ. When we become aware of how great and effective His great love is in forgiving and redeeming us, we are humbled and draw near to Him as He draws near to us, and we see how poor and naked we are before a holy and righteous God.

We will see ourselves as the sinners we are before God. We will no longer blame others or hide behind our guilt, shame and fear. Because, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. There isn’t anything we can do, in and of ourselves, to pay for our sin debt. The truth of the matter is, we don’t have to keep trying to please God by trying to do better, to be on our best behavior; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

From Adam’s fall in the garden of Eden, until the day our Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary, as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the state of fallen man was awaiting the day when the fullness of the time had come, and God sent forth His only begotten Son, born of a woman, born under the law, so that He might redeem those who are born under the law.(Galatians 4:4&5)
