  • The Word that delivers me from the enemy!

    Psalm 7:1-2; Proverbs 7:1-5; John 1:1-14

    Psalm 7:1-2 ESV
[1] O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and deliver me, [2] lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver.

    Proverbs 7:1-5 NKJV
[1] My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. [2] Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. [3] Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. [4] Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin, [5] That they may keep you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words.

Taking refuge in God (Psalms 7:1-2) by keeping His word within me; His commands and laws as the apple of my eye (Proverbs 7:1-5). When I do this, He will save me from the enemy of my soul who pursues me like roaring a lion, seeking to tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces.

From the adultress, seductress, immoral woman, who flatters me with her words, aka, the lies and deceptive words of the enemy. Adultress is figurative of this world and all of its ways, which is where my enemy, Satan, resides as the God of this world and the father of lies and deception.

It’s not just a matter of reading my Bible every day, but meditating on God’s word in that quiet, secret place within my soul, at the core of my being, where the heart of God meets with my heart daily,  binding them on my fingers and writing them on the tablet of my heart. When I do this, the Holy Spirit will make the word of God like my next of kin. His wisdom, instructions and knowledge will be like my sister and when that roaring lion, the enemy of my soul, walks about seeking to devour me, God will be my refuge, my hiding place. He will hide me under the shadow of His wings, like an eagle protecting its young from predators, safely tucked away. The enemy won’t be able to see me when I’m covered by the shadow of God’s wings.

No human intervention or clever device will save me from the attacks of the enemy of my soul, who can only come at me externally. No pop psychology, ideology, religion, or philosophy can save me from inner turmoil and disturbance of my peace and joy.  Merely going to church won’t drive the enemy away.
It’s only by hiding God’s word in your heart; binding it on your finger and writing it on the tablet of your heart, that you will be preserved and saved.

This is the promise of God. Give Him all of you; your heart, mind, soul and strength. Humble yourself in His sight (in your heart ) and He will lift you up. When you do this every day, that is the full meaning and act of “repent and believe.”

This is the path of righteousness that leads to life.

When we repent of our sin, turn towards God and believe in His Word, we’re choosing to receive the Word of God who became flesh and dwelt among us.

    John 1:1-5, 12, 14 ESV
[1]  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. [4] In him was life, and the life was the light of men. [5] The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

[12] But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
[14] And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus is the Word of God, who took on human flesh and dwelt among us. The scriptures point to Jesus, from Genesis to revelation and right here in the Psalms and Proverbs, Jesus is the Word. When we hide His word in our hearts, it is the living triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the godhead three in one, who resides in our hearts through faith.

This is the living power of God’s word in Hebrews 4:12, which gets deep, down in me, penetrating the deepest parts of my life; my heart, mind, strength and soul. God’s word gets into my moral fibers, exposing every thought, intention and motive of my heart.

  • The living power of God’s word is sharper than a double-edged sword

What are the guiding principles of your life? Are they found in the Word of God, or in the words and “wisdom” of this  world?

    Proverbs 5:1-6 ESV
[1]  My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, [2] that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. [3] For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, [4] but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. [5] Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol; [6] she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it.

    Ephesians 6:17 ESV
[17] and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

    Hebrews 4:12 ESV
[12] For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

    https://bible.com/bible/59/heb.4.12.ESV

Proverbs chapter 5 is a warning to those who desire to be friends with this world. The speech and language of the world are compared here to the words of an adultress or seductress; a forbidden woman.

Her lips drip honey Her speech is smoother than oil but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double edged sword

The true wisdom that comes from the word of God is contrasted here with the words and wisdom of this world, which seem to be words that can lead us to greatness and prosperity. But true wisdom from God comes through the living power of His word, not from the philosophies and ideologies and so called wisdom of this world.

The seductress here is figurative of the words and wisdom of this world, which seem to be more attractive and promising, yet in the end they become known for what they are; bitter, destructive, leading eventually to destruction

The words of the seductress or adultress here are described as being “sharp as a double edged sword” yet the living power of God’s word is SHARPER than a double-edged sword. The image of the sword is used here. The sword was the weapon of warfare in those days, and they were kept very sharp and ready for battle. A double edged sword is sharpened on both sides and able cut through a human body, or that of any beast, with deadly precision.

The words of the adultress are poison, leading to death. They have no life in them. But the word of God and the wisdom that comes from Him brings living power, able to penetrate our human heart, right down to the core of our being, cutting through all of the thorns and thistles, wounds and scars, deep secrets and hidden sins, buried underneath our human nature, locked away from our memory, in a place we don’t dare go, in the dark caverns of our soul.

But the living power of God’s word goes into those guarded places within our soul and exposes them, bringing them out into the open where we can deal with them. The living power of God’s word brings hope and healing to our human soul, while the dead, bitter words of this world; pop psychology, religious philosophies and ideologies, offer no real, eternal solutions to our deepest grievances and hurts. Such worldly wisdom brings no freedom, peace or real healing, just  temporary sugar coating.

Are you ready for true and lasting healing, inner peace and total freedom? Look to the living power of God’s word, which is sharper than a double-edged sword and able to deliver you from the empty and lifeless promises of this world and bring you true hope, joy, comfort and happiness.
