No Man is An Island

Proverbs 18:1 ESV

[1 Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.

Proverbs 18:1 NLT

[1] Unfriendly people care only about themselves; they lash out at common sense.

Jude 1:19 ESV

[19] It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.

Jude 1:19 NLT

[19] These people are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They follow their natural instincts because they do not have God’s Spirit in them.

Isolate (vb) separate, confine, detach, disconnect, disengage, divide, insulate, remove, segregate, and sequester.

“No man is an island” means that no person is completely self-sufficient or isolated; everyone is interconnected and relies on others to some degree, essentially signifying the importance of community and interdependence between people; it is a quote from the English poet John Donne’s “Devotions upon Emergent Occasions”.

He who isolates himself

An act of one’s will to live alone, separated from others; not necessarily in a literal, physical sense. One can be living with or among other people, and be isolated mentally spiritually and emotionally; detached. Many times this is a matter of pushing away the pain of bad relationships or traumatic events in one’s past. Isolation mindset says, “I don’t need anyone else. I can do life on my own.”

One’s subconscious mind might be harboring past hurts from bad and/or traumatic experiences. Physical, mental or sexual abuse, past relationships that failed, especially with family or a spouse or mate.

Isolation leaves one all alone, internally. This is when, where and how the enemy may find us most vulnerable.

This where the roots of addiction form. People who isolate themselves become separated and detached. They often turn to drugs and or alcohol to medicate themselves against the pain of past hurts and failures.

He who isolates himself,

Rages against all wise judgement (common sense, sound wisdom)

isolation can lead one to become unfriendly, withdrawn, etc. left to one’s own thoughts, feelings and emotions, with no one else to talk to and with; no one to support them. The enemy has convinced them that no one else understands or is concerned; nobody cares about me or my problems. So they become more deeply detached from others.

Isolating oneself eventually leads to self-centeredness. God did not create us to live alone, separated and detached from others. He created us to live in community. Isolation separates us from what God created us for. Living in community; loving and serving one another, helping and supporting one another. Jesus told His disciples to ‘“love one another. As I have loved you, so love one another.”

We cannot love others if we are isolated; separated, detached, like a person living on an island, all alone.

Isolation can lead one to self destruction
